Jan 23, 2:20pm (1 review) computers http://www-users.itlabs.umn.edu/classes/...- Today is the first day of my return to college... such as it is. Introduction to Computer Programming (okay, the title is "Structures..." or something, but it's basically the first class for all CSci majors).
So, I'm sitting in class listening to the prof talk about incompletes, and attendance, and grades and homework, and thinking "Sheesh... Does he think he's talking to a bunch of kids or something?" Then I look around... Duh! Of course, he is! He's talking to about 200 kids who aren't all that different from me when I was that age. And if I were talking to my 20-year old self, I'd be a lot harsher.
First I think to myself, "Pfft! I'm been programming longer than most of these kids have been alive..."
Then I look at some of the kids there, and think, "Heck- most of these kids have been programming for about as long as they've been alive, too."
The the prof then goes through some "basic refresher stuff, so we're all on the same page." And the marker board, he builds the layers of programming:
"There's Hardware... you know, circuits and stuff. None of you are ever likely to do any work at this level." Umm... back in the day, I built primitive 'computers' with transitors from Radio Shack.
"Then there's Machine Code to program the hardward. You'll probably never do any work at this level." Umm... I did rudimentary 1's and 0's on that Radio Shack machine.
"Then there's Assembly Language, but again, you probably won't ever do any at this level." Like on my old VIC 20, when I actually did some 8506 coding, just to make the most out of my 3K memory?
So, now I'm not only feeling old, I'm feeling obsolete. Then, he talked about "you know, programming on punch cards- like they did 40 years ago", I wanted to leap up and say, "HEY!! It was only 20 YEARS ago, and I did it, bub!!!"
So, I'm not sure if I feel confident, or archaic...

Update, Friday Jan.25th
So, last night, I had the first lab of this class, and of course, there's the introduction of the various TA's who are running the lab. One looks familiar... can it be?
In another life, apparently, I met a guy in college who would wind up being an off-again, on-again friend for a long while. And sure enough, 20 years later, his son is now teaching me. Ack!

Dec 25, 2007 4:38pm (1 review) liberties http://picasaweb.google.com/khidhala/San...- Last Thursday, my boy had his first concert. The night before, he asked if he could get a tuxedo to wear for the performance. Well, he was thinking of James Bond, for some reason, but we persuaded him towards something a little less formal:
Oh, and bless his soul- he took one look at the black clip-on tie that originally came with the outfit, and said, "Throw that away- I want a REAL tie!" *beaming with pride and joy*
